Subject: English Language Arts
Project Name: Cardboard Construction

Goal: Design a product and make a prototype that your partner would want to buy. Students interviewed a partner with questions and had to learn about the other person's point of view. Next, they were given a banana box to use for their project. Tools included makedo connectors, cardboard cutters, markers, scissors and tape. The results were wide, creative and varied.
Subject: Earth and Physical Science
Project Name: Ocean Acidification Booklet Project

Recently in our study of Oceanography, students investigated the impact of ocean acidification. This began in the Innovation Lab participating in a simulated underwater experience using virtual reality devices and Google Expeditions. There are some photos of our time in the lab here. Students then selected a research question that illuminated a certain aspect of ocean acidification from the causes, to the impacts, to the future outlook. They provided findings through oral presentations in a symposium format to their classmates. The section culminated with students creating an informational page for an ocean acidification booklet. Each class made their own booklet that was shared with parents and guardians. We also made a master copy of select student work across all classes which is attached.

This was a fun activity to do with our students as they all were invested in their part of ocean acidification and allowed us all to gain a deeper understanding of the topic. We hope you enjoy looking through their booklet and seeing the hard work our students put into this project.

Hello Car Enthusiasts!

There is a lot of excitement in room 410 at YHS! That's because the Electric Car Design and Build class is busy assembling their electric car for their big race in May. Tom Pitman is in the driver's seat (for now, anyway....)!

This class is made up of Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors and today they were working on building the bumper hoop, the steering controls and the drive train (pictures enclosed). They are hoping to finish building the car by the end of March so they can spend the month of April practicing their driving skills. They want to be fully prepared to race their electric machine at the Lime Rock Motor Speedway in CT on May 18th. There are several different classes that compete at this race including, the novice class, the modified class, the super modified class, the solar power class etc. YHS will be competing in the novice class and will be driving against schools from up and down the east coast. YHS is one of only 2 high schools in Maine to compete in this race (the other being Noble High School). Go Clippers!

The race on May 18th is all about endurance. The goal is to see how many laps you can complete in one hour. During that hour, there has to be at least one pit stop. During the pit stop, the students will check their car and change drivers. The car must complete the 1 hour race using the same battery the entire time. Each car will have 2 drivers on the day of the race, but in case you are wondering, all the Yarmouth students will be able to drive the car in April during the test drive stage.

When this class was originally offered, there was an overwhelming response from the students. So much so, that YHS partially funded a second electric car! So, there will be two cars and two classes heading to CT on May 18th. Mr. Pitman often finds students working on the cars before and after class. The students have said they are so excited to finally put their math skills to use in the real world. The kit came with a 42 page instruction manual. Bring on the math!

Once the race is over, the students will break down the cars so that future classes can rebuild them for next year's race. Mr. Pitman's ultimate goal is to build a car and enter it in the solar powered class one day.

And the fun doesn't stop there. They are hoping to drive down Main Street during the Clam Festival parade, showing off their fancy electric cars. They are working on getting stickers for the cars to showcase their sponsors (YEF, Coastal Maine Hardware and Batteries Plus etc). Let's talk stickers....how big is our largest YEF sticker?? Tom said he'd like to put a YEF sticker front and center on one of the cars. If we don't have one big enough, Tom said he'd order a decal. It might be fun to have some YEF stickers for the helmets. Can we send some Tom's way?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Part One: Grades 11 and 12
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">David Mills is in the house! Part one of Marita O'Neill and Jackie Brookes's grant, Celebrating Diversity: American Voices -- Langston Hughes and Martin Luther King, came to life today at YHS! David Mills performed as Langston Hughes in the YPAC this morning for the Junior & Senior class. He was a one man show! He started his performance reciting Hughes's famous poem called The Negro Speaks of Rivers, then continued reciting Hughes's poems and short stories for about an hour. Throughout his performance, he used many different voices: male, female, young, old, black & white.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">After his presentation this morning, he conducted a workshop on Blues Poetry in two Senior AP Literature classes. The class read a Hughes poem titled Midwinter Blues. After the students read the poem out loud, they dissected each stanza, line by line, discussing setting, structure, form, tone, meaning, repetition and rhyme. The students then wrote their own Blues poem using the formula they'd just learned. In the background, Mr. Mills played a Chicago Blues song, while the students wrote their poem. At the end of class, a couple of brave students read their poems out loud and I'm here to report that Ms. O'Neill has some terrific poets in her class! I could tell the students really enjoyed the workshop, because they personally thanked Mr. Mills and shook his hand on the way out the door.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">What a bonus for the students to have their English teachers and History teachers join forces to create this experience for them.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Part two of the David Mills grant started off with a bang today! The YPAC was filled to capacity with Freshman, Sophomores and 8th graders as David Mills transformed himself into Martin Luther King Jr.

It was another terrific one man show! David Mills recited excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches and letters, including "I Have a Dream", "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" and "If I had Sneezed". In between the speeches, he performed interludes to bring the audience from one stage of King's life to another. One of the interludes discussed how King felt when the 4 girls were killed in the Alabama church in 1963, just days after giving his "I Have a Dream" speech. It was a powerful performance.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This afternoon I attended a workshop in Mrs. Ruthman's Sophomore Modern World History class. It was a small class, but they knew their stuff! Mr. Mills started off the class by giving the students some historical context around the letter that Dr. King wrote from his jail cell in 1963. He talked about the bus boycott, which lasted over a year, the protests in Birmingham (which was nicknamed "Bombingham"), and why Dr. King was imprisoned. When talking about Dr. King's letter from jail, Mr. Mills explained how Dr. King appealed to the reader on an emotional and intellectual level through his high rhetoric. Mr. Mills described the letter as an "epistolary poem", which is a poem in the form of a letter. After the class read the "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", line by line, they discussed setting, repetition, meaning, parallel syntax, alliteration, paratactic syntax, hypophora, antithesis, anaphora, periodic sentences and metaphors. Did you get all that? The Sophomores did! They were a smart bunch.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">After the lesson on the literary devices found in Dr. King's letter, the students were asked to write their own
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> "epistolary poem" and were asked to include the elements they'd just learned from Dr. King's letter. They were charged with writing about an experience they'd had in their lives where they'd been misunderstood, hurt or disrespected by someone with whom they were not able to respond to. The students wrote and wrote and wrote. Mrs. Ruthman's class turned into a writing machine.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I know this grant was written for the high school, but I thought you might be interested in a couple of quotes from the 8th graders who attended the performance this morning.....

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">"I loved it! The acting was amazing and I learned a lot of things about King's struggles that I wasn't awarde of. I had no idea how vicious racism could be. I was struck by the phone threat King received where they said they would kill his wife and daughter. My big takeaway was that hatred is pointless" This 8th grader said he was very moved and said this program was one of his favorites!

"It was awesome! Mr. Mills did a great job with the miming. I learned a lot about MLK".

Students were assigned an infectious disease to research in groups. They shared their research to create a full understanding of five aspects of the disease and its epidemiology in order to develop an action plan in response to a posed scenario. Students presented the action plan to the class in a press conference, where other students took on the roles of journalists. The focus of this Cornerstone Assessment is to improve the level of questions (fact-based vs. explanation-based) students ask and answer through research.

On Thursday April 7, Yarmouth High School was lucky enough the host Google Expeditions. Teachers who signed up brought their classes to the library and computer center for 30 minute periods to explore "expeditions" that they had pre-chosen to supplement the curriculum. The list is vast and seemingly includes just about any area you can think of. Each student was given an Android smart device and a Google Cardboard to look through. The teacher had a tablet that he/she could control the events that students saw on their cardboard. Some of the time was spent exploring an area, such as Machu Picchu, or the teacher could pick a spot and freeze an area so that students could move to that area to hear an explanation. The activities were well received and we look forward to the fall when Expeditions will be available on iOS.
Recently, Yarmouth High School was invited to take part in the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program.
A lot of kids use digital media in the classroom and at home. At Harrison Middle School, students have made it part of their extracurricular activities, too. The goal of the Digital Media Club is to “mostly just develop some skills around video production, but also to show them it can be fun,” said Mike Arsenault, the instructional technology integrator who advises club members. According to Arsenault, more than a dozen students participate, most of them fifth- and sixth-graders.

The club, which was started last year by a student who now attends Yarmouth High School, was able to buy technology and equipment with a grant from the Yarmouth Education Foundation. Around $6,000 from YEF was used to purchase cameras, Final Cut Pro video editing software, cases, tripods, shoulder mounts, microphones and an iMac computer. “My goal is to introduce the kids to the tools so they can use them in the classroom,” Arsenault said. The kids mostly work on video production in the club, but Arsenault said they’re free to work on a variety of things, such as photo editing, animation and using GarageBand software. “A lot of this is creating whatever they feel like creating,” he said.

One thing the club recently created was a video with 317 Main Community Music Center. Arsenault said the club was approached by Amy Sinclair, the music center’s director of marketing and communications, about collaborating on the project. “She was great working with kids through the shoot and with editing after the shoot,” Arsenault said. Five students worked with 317 Main to create Project Wonderland, a holiday video showcasing musicians at the center. The students did camera work and editing, and were also in the video. Seventh-grader Eleanor said she used a lot of skills she already had when working on the video, but also learned new things about editing. “I really like editing,” she said. “It was really fun.” Arsenault said he was impressed by the work the students did on the project. “I knew it’d come out well, but I was pleasantly surprised,” he said. “They did a great job with it.”

The club doesn’t have any plans to partner with community organizations in the future, but will focus on doing school projects, Arsenault said. “There’s always so many great things going on within the school, but we don’t always promote them enough,” he said. Although Arsenault wants to do more digital media projects at Harrison Middle, the school already is known for its innovative technology. It has been named an Apple Distinguished School since 2007, with the exception of the 2013-14 school year. According to Arsenault, the award is presented to schools that have innovative learning and teaching, ongoing professional learning, a flexible learning environment and also show visionary leadership. Arsenault, who’s a Google Certified Innovator, said the club is a great way for kids to learn about digital media but, more importantly, it’s a way for them to see that creating things with technology is fun. Eleanor said the club has taught her both of Arsenault’s objectives. “Sometimes I wonder if I can do something on iMovie and Mr. Arsenault always knows, and helps me,” she said.

For three days each spring, all sophomores and juniors participate in Career Exploration. They have the opportunity to go to local businesses and job shadow. We have noticed that more and more students are being asked to bring their computer with them and often participate in activities for the business. One student worked a travel company that specialized in trips for teenagers. The student was asked to look at many competitor websites and pick the best aspects of each site. Another student shadowed the social media strategist at an advertising company. She learned about Google Ad-Sense and how to reach certain demographics. Students have participated in all kinds of experiences from ski patrol, to the weather station and everything in between.

On Thursday, Some of those students participated in an event at the Apple Store in South Portland. The idea was to promote how MLTI is preparing students for careers after high school. Our students were there to promote the idea of how the job shadow allowed them to follow their passion in the arts. The worked with VIA, a creative ad agency in Portland.

Here they are speaking about their experience.
May-June Math Exploration Units
Project Name: Scratch Programming
Resources: ScratchEd

The setting: twenty-one 4th graders moving through a Scratch Curriculum that can be found on the ScratchEd community site for educators. There are an increasing amount of resources and ideas for using Scratch in the elementary grades including Wes Fryer's Scratch materials.

The backdrop: Last December we use the Scratch online activity to make holiday cards for the Hour of Code. Middle school students came and helped 4th graders with this introduction to Scratch and coding. In late May of this year I worked with the 4th grade team to develop explorations in math instruction; twenty-one fourth graders worked with me on Scratch for two or three days a week.

What it sounded like: The most common thing heard in the classroom each day was, "How'd you do that?". The spirit of communication, collaboration and creative exploration vibrated throughout the room.

What it looked like: Adapting the curriculum, I created folders of handouts for students to follow. The lessons and handouts are in this slideshow:

These photos and videos were captured with my cell phone as I was working with students so they are of limited quality, but they portray the activity and learning.

We started with the tutorial on the Scratch website as a review for everyone. Then they were charged with the task of "making something surprising" happen and share it.

Scratch learning is designed to support collaboration and students often worked in teams. With parent permission they were able to join the Scratch online community, upload their projects and view the structure of posted projects.

By the fourth class students were becoming experts at "debugging" scripts and moving on to making mazes, games and stories. At the end of each class students volunteered to share their projects and explain their learning.

This series of classes stands out for me as one of the most enjoyable, stimulating teaching experiences I've had. The students were engaged, sharing their learning and making progress from one day to the next.

This quote from Howard Gardner was one of my inspirations for this Scratch activity:

High time for an example. We turn here to Scratch, a wonderful application created over the past two decades by Mitch Resnick, a valued colleague at MIT, and his colleagues. Building on Seymour Papert’s pioneering work with LOGO— a prototypical example of constructivist education— Scratch is a simple programming language accessible even to youngsters who have just reached school age. By piecing together forms that resemble pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, users of Scratch can create their own messages, be these stories, works of art, games, musical compositions, dances, or animated cartoons— indeed, just about any form in any kind of format. Moreover, users of Scratch can and do post their creations. Others around the world can visit these creations, react to them, build on them, and perhaps even re-create them in their own favored symbolic system. The genius of Scratch is twofold. First of all, it opens up a plethora of modes of expression, so that nearly every child can find an approach that is congenial with his or her own goals, strengths, and imaginations. Second, educational ends and priorities are not dictated from on high; rather, they can and do emerge from the child’s own explorations of the Scratch universe. In that sense, Scratch brings pleasure and comfort to those who believe in the constructivist view of knowledge. Not only are users building their own forms of meaning and constructing knowledge that they personally value, but they are epitomizing the claim of cognitivists that one learns by taking the initiative, making one’s own often instructive mistakes along the way, and then, on the basis of feedback from self and others, altering course and moving ahead.

On Thursday, April 17, the Student Senate at Yarmouth High School sponsored an UnConference.

The idea came from thinking about wanting to do TED Talks, but not wanting to limit audience size. They wanted the entire high school to be able to participate. And it had to be completely student run.

Guidelines:

Students would sign up for sessions (since this was the first time they tried it, they thought it might be helpful to get an idea of what students were interested in)

Each advisory group had to have a minimum of one pitch for a session.

The person or persons who pitched the session are the facilitators.

The facilitator comes up with 2 guiding questions and one other source for the discussion and submits them ahead of time.

A teacher should be present in the room that the session was taking place.

Teachers can participate in the discussion if they want to.

Every student has to participate, even if they have open campus.

At the beginning of the UnConference period, all students go to advisor period. Advisors hand out the schedules (students do not know what session they are in until they get there).

Here are the sessions that were proposed. Because there were so many good ones, the Senate decided to run 2 sessions. It was probably a lot more work, but they were happy they did it.

Once again we have a classroom participating in a global project communicating and collaborating with students across the U.S. and in some international settings. This year Laura Wetmore is participating with her class and they are posting to the project wiki. All classrooms are posting a multimedia greeting (called a "handshake") and a View from Our Window project. The project schools are divided into three working groups to collaborate on a topic, this year the topics will be Sharing Stories and Celebrations. Teachers are communicating via. email as well as a project "ning" and students are using Google Earth to "travel" to the various locations. This is an example of a project that meets the new Global Awareness theme of the updated Social Studies Framework.
Teachers: Grade 3 Team, Cathy Wolinsky
Subjects: Science, Math
Project Name: Lego WeDo
Resources: Yarmouth Education Foundation funding for materials and kits

Third graders are exploring the Lego Education materials called "Lego WeDo"during a set of class periods. The Computer Lab provides an open setting for students to work in pairs to select one of twelve projects. Working together they follow the directions to put together the blocks to make the project. Then they connect it to a computer so that the motor or sensor can follow a program students made using the Lego WeDo software.
For MLTI devices without a screensaver setting, the images will be made available as a download, allowing students/teachers to download the images and use them as a background on their device.

More than 250 Maine students submitted images to be considered and an independent panel of three judges selected the 22 pieces using a rubric. The artwork challenge is an annual opportunity that has attracted entries from more than 1,200 students, grades K-12, during its six-year history. The students whose artwork was selected are also invited to attend the 2014 MLTI Student Conference free of charge.

The selected students from Yarmouth are listed below. Each Art Fundamentals student creates a portfolio of work created during the semester. Over time and after taking different art classes, students can collect quite a few portfolios of work, demonstrating their skills in organization, thinking and writing about work, and growth over time. These are skills valued not only in the art world, but in virtually every job imaginable. When looking, please know these are works in progress.
This year we are going to have 3 periods during the year when we have discussions based on topics related to digital citizenship with 9th graders. Students will choose the topic they want to participate in. Round 1 will cover Digital Footprint and Digital Overload. Students will watch videos and read articles during Science and Social studies classes. On December 6th, students will participate in the Digital Compass opening activity and then go to smaller groups for the discussion. Groups will be generated randomly and each will have a teacher facilitator. Students will come prepared to the discussion ready to share and bring more questions.
